Inspiration - Happy Birthday David Bowie

Ode to Bowie

If David Bowie had been around, he would have turned 70 today...  But even if he's not, we - his fans and his band - will congratulate him anyway.  What wouldn't I have given for the chance to go to London and attend the concert his old band is throwing him...  Some people have to work, you know...  But for what it's worth, I'm there in my mind and in my heart.

David's been a part of my life since my early teenage years, and even though "Never let me down" made me stop listening to him for years, he never really left.  It's just sad he had to die to make me catch up with all his amazing work.  Better late than never I guess, but in some cases it's too little too late.  I will never see him in concert...

All his songs mean the world to me, but there are a few that are attached to memories.  Please take a look at this:

  • Fashion - I heard it on the radio and I was hooked, my first Bowie album ("Scary Monsters").
  • Ashes to Ashes - at school we had a Christmas show and a friend mimed this song.
  • Cat People - I coreographed a dance performance in a guide show to this song.
  • Absolute Beginners - I was desperately in love with a guy from school when I was in 11th grade.  I was playing this single over and over as I was sitting on the floor in my grandparents' living room, sewing my outfit for the last day of school.
  • Life on Mars - a song that's grown on me and now it gives me the goosebumps.  I first heard it with Frida from ABBA, a Swedish version on her solo album.  At that time I didn't know it was a Bowie song.
  • Heroes - a crossword we solved in English class in 10th grade, I knew this answer.
  • Valentine's Day - first song I heard in years, and David was right back in my life.
  • Lazarus - a local radio station played this song while presenting David's "Blackstar".
